Hillel sponsors Nov. 19 film screening
(Nov. 18, 2002)--Los Angeles screenwriter/producer David Brandes will speak at a special screening of "The Quarrel," from 4-6 p.m. Nov. 19 at the 1604 Campus University Center Retama Auditorium. Produced in Canada in 1992, the film is Brandes' award-winning screen adaptation of Chaim Grade's haunting post-World War II story of two Holocaust survivors who meet accidentally in a Montreal park in 1948, only to take up an argument left unresolved nine years earlier.
One is a pious Rabbi who runs a yeshiva for Jewish orphans, the other a secular writer who has long since lost his religious faith. As they spend the day together, the men--portrayed by actors Saul Rubinek and R.H. Thomson -- alternately cling to one another in shared experience and then bridle over their opposing views of God and the world.
Described by leading film critics Michael Medved and Jeffrey Lyons as one of the 10 best films of the year, "The Quarrel" received numerous accolades from both secular and religious groups, including two Canadian Academy Award "Genie" nominations (best screen adaptation and best director).
Brandes' presentation, sponsored by Hillel at UTSA, is part of this year's Diversity Week observance. A reception will follow the film and discussion. The event is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Division of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, Department of History, Office of Multicultural Programs and Hillel at UTSA.
