Randy Bomer
Author to speak on teaching writing Nov. 14 at UTSA
(Nov. 8, 2002)--Author and scholar Randy Bomer will discuss "Teaching Writing for a Better World," from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 in the University Center Mesquite Room (2.01.24) at the UTSA 1604 Campus. The event, sponsored by the Department of English, Classics, and Philosophy, is free and open to all.
Bomer, an assistant professor of language and literacy studies at UT Austin, is author of "Time for Meaning: Crafting Literate Lives in Middle and High School" and co-author of "For a Better World: Reading and Writing for Social Action."
"I do many different kinds of work in the profession of literacy education, but my heart, my attention and my hope remain focused on the classroom," Bomer said.
Currently chair of the NCTE Task Force on High-Stakes Testing, vice president-elect of the National Council of Teachers of English and a member of the editorial boards for English Education and Language Arts, Bomer is a former middle and high school English teacher in urban and rural school districts. He was co-director of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University in New York.
