UTSA to expand course offerings at Brooks CityBase
(Nov. 12, 2002)--With the spring 2003 semester, the University of Texas at
San Antonio will expand course offerings at Brooks CityBase to include physiology,
biosocial genetics and wavelet applications.
The classes will be taught in a new distance learning facility, allowing experts
at Brooks to contribute to classes taught at UTSAs 1604 and Downtown
campuses, while faculty at both campuses can provide instruction for Brooks
students.
The distance learning facility, located in Building 559, is the newest in
a trio that includes state-of-the-art facilities at the 1604 and Downtown
campuses. All of the classrooms can be connected in point-to-point or multi-point
conferences.
"We are excited to expand course offerings at the UTSA distance learning
facility at Brooks CityBase," said Clyde Phelix, associate dean
for academic affairs in the College of Sciences. "We anticipate both
military and civilian personnel at Brooks will find the opportunity to take
classes at the base as convenient as the general public living nearby or already
enrolled at the community colleges in the area."
UTSA will offer more upper-division undergraduate courses at Brooks so that
community college students can take junior- and senior-level classes that
will transfer to four-year universities. In the near future, more courses
from the College of Sciences and the College of Business will be offered with
over 20 computers available for student use. For many of the courses, the
faculty will be able to interact directly with the students within the classroom
at Brooks, while other faculty members will lecture at the other two campuses
on a rotating basis throughout the semester.
The physiology course to be offered, AHS 2103 Human Biology: Physiology, is
a common prerequisite for nursing schools and other health-related professions,
including pharmacy and medical laboratory technicians. The course, which provides
comprehensive coverage of the human organ systems, includes discussion of
the physiological processes pertinent to understanding clinical pathophysiological
conditions and disease processes.
Biosocial Genetics (BIO 3083-002) covers human heredity and social issues
with emphasis on inherited diseases, genetic problems and evolutionary change
in relation to culture, diversity and mating systems.
Wavelets and Their Applications (MAT 6973) will provide advanced educational
opportunities for military and civilian individuals at Brooks CityBase. Topics
include inner product spaces and projections, multiresolution analysis, computational
aspects and applications to data compression, speech synthesis, image processing
and numerical analysis.
