UTSA debaters place fifth in Oklahoma tourney

(Nov. 22, 2002)--UTSA seniors and debate partners Katie Richey and Jeremy Stevens placed fifth in a field of thirty debate teams in Edmond, Okla. The University of Central Oklahoma hosted twenty-two universities from across the country in a three-day tournament the weekend of Nov. 9. The most recent outing Nov. 15-18 took the Roadrunners' debaters to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete in a grueling field of 190 of the nation's top teams at Wake Forest University, where they had a fifty-fifty record.

In Oklahoma, Richey and Stevens won judges' decisions over teams from Eastern New Mexico University, Wichita State University and the Cross Examination Debate Association's 2001 national champions, Fort Hays State University, the team that went on to win first place in the tournament. UTSA lost its single elimination round against the University of North Texas on a 2-1 judges' decision. Stevens placed seventh among the sixty speakers in his division.

Marquis Williams, junior, and Dan Conway, junior, also competed for UTSA in the Novice Division. The first-year debaters won rounds against Southwest Louisiana University and Eastern New Mexico.

At Wake Forest, the team composed of Kate Richey and Jeremy Stevens had a fifty-fifty record. They won four rounds aginast teams from Texas-Austin, Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Wyoming and Northwestern. The UTSA team is currently ranked 42nd in the nation out of 459 teams (open division). The UTSA novice team, composed of Dan Conway and Marquis Williams, is ranked 39th out of 64 teams.

UTSA debaters will now take a much needed break to concentrate on studies. Their next tournament will be at Baylor University the third week of January.
