New members, assignments set for UTSA development team
(Nov. 15, 2002)--Two new staff members have joined the University of Texas at San Antonio development team, and two other members are taking on new assignments, according to Sonia Martinez, executive director of development.
Joining UTSA are Linda Lopez-George, associate director of development for corporations, and Alex Castaneda, director of advancement for the College of Business.
Lopez-George, a native Texan who earned both undergraduate and master's degrees at UT-Austin, has been involved with development and alumni relations for higher education institutions for more than a decade, most recently as development officer for the St. Mary's University School of Law. She is a former regional development director for Washington State University and also worked in development positions with Eastern Washington University College of Business and Public Administration and Gonzaba University School of Law.
In addition to St. Mary's, Lopez-George's Texas experience includes four years as associate director of development/director of alumni affairs for the Incarnate Word Academy in Corpus Christi, and two years as executive director of the Corpus Christi Literacy Council.
Castaneda is a certified fundraising executive, one of only 4,200 worldwide. She is a member of the Council for the Advancement and Support for Education and the Association of Fundraising Professionals. From 1997 until accepting the UTSA position, she was with the University of North Florida-Jacksonville, serving first as development director for the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Computing Science and Engineering, and then development officer and director of community affairs for the College of Business Administration.
After earning an undergraduate degree at the University of the Incarnate Word and a master's at Trinity University, Castaneda returned to serve in development positions at both her alma maters.
Two UTSA development staff members have also assumed new duties. Mary Elizabeth "Bette" Simpson, who has served as associate director of development for major gifts at UTSA for the past year, is now associate director of development for foundations and organizations. Janice Odom, formerly associate director of development for the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, is now associate director of development for individual and planned giving.
