Nacimiento: A Fantasy Christmas Village
ITC presents Texas holiday traditions, fantasy village
(Nov. 26, 2002)--The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) will present two special holiday-themed events in December.
Come to the ITC for "Texas Holiday Traditions," a holiday celebration, from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, on the ITC Back 40. This seasonal family favorite which began in 1995 is in conjunction with the McNay Art Museum's "Holiday Music at the McNay," 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec.8.
Strolling musicians will entertain visitors along paths lit by glowing luminarias. Guests can trim a freshly cut pine tree, listen to traditional holiday music and craft homemade cornhusk angels. Visitors to the one-room schoolhouse can join the town pageant and stop by the adobe house to visit Pancho Claus and make sure they are on his list. In the barn or at the fort, activities include stringing popcorn and cranberries, creating Victorian ornaments and making a clove-studded pomander. Seasonal treats such as hot chocolate and tamales will be available for purchase.
"Nacimiento: A Fantasy Christmas Village" will be on display Dec. 8, 2002-Feb. 9, 2003 on the ITC Exhibit Floor. Nacimientos are Hispanic nativity scenes that come from a rich tradition and are created from a variety of materials. For the first time in more than 30 holiday seasons, renowned nacimiento creator Gloria Cadena will supervise the construction of an original nacimiento in a public place.
Cadena has received national media attention for building her unique fantasy
Christmas village. What started in 1972 as a small nativity scene on a chest,
grew into a sweeping display that took weeks to build. The display grew to
more than eight feet tall, taking up almost a third of her den. This season,
she has brought her unique display to ITC to be shared with the public for
the first time.
The Institute of Texan Cultures, one of the three campuses of the University of Texas at San Antonio, is an educational center concerned with the history and diverse cultures of Texas. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., ITC is located in downtown San Antonio. Admission is $5 for adults; $2 for children (3-12); $3 for seniors (65+) and military with I.D.; and free for children 2 and under and UTSA students, faculty and staff with UTSA card.
