Madrigal Dinner 2002

'Home for the Holidays: Christmas 1945' is Madrigal Dinner theme

(Nov.18, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Music jumps back in time to post-World War II America with this year's Madrigal Dinner production. John Silantien and Todd James' "Home for the Holidays: Christmas 1945" will be presented Dec. 7, 13 and 14 at the 1604 Campus Kiva.

Although the Renaissance is usually represented in the Department of Music's annual Madrigal Dinner presentations, this year's dinner is set in December 1945 and presents the music and fun of a live radio broadcast as it might have occurred on a military base in San Antonio following World War II. The scenes will unfold as victorious troops have returned to the United States, along with the USO entertainers who lifted their spirits during the war. Loved ones are reunited and dream of their first peaceful Christmas in many years.

Silantien, together with Dee Mitchell, archivist at Lackland AFB, researched how San Antonio scenes would have looked during that time. The decor of the Kiva will include photos of a holiday dance at the old Gunter Hotel, pinup girls and soldiers in uniform performing in a jazz band. In addition, dances of the period such as the Carioca will be featured.

Tickets, including a catered dinner, are $40 and $50. For more information or ticket reservations, call the Department of Music at (210) 458-4355.
