UTSA MAES named Outstanding Chapter of the Year
(Nov. 4, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio's student chapter
of the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) received
the Outstanding Chapter of the Year award at the 2002 International Symposium
held recently in Anaheim, Calif. The National MAES organization, which has
over 50 student chapters across the country, recognizes one chapter each year
for its achievements. Some of the noted chapters include Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, University of California at Berkeley and Notre Dame University.
In addition to receiving the award, three members of UTSA's MAES chapter,
Karen Florendo, Juan Portillo and Rebecca Martinez placed
first in a research design competition sponsored by Ford Motor Co. UTSA's
MAES team has won the competition two of the last three years. MAES member
Ricardo Ramirez also received a scholarship from General Motors at the
competition.
UTSA's winning design was the "key keeper," a device placed on a
keychain that keeps the doors from locking a driver out of a vehicle. The
device also could provide pre-programmed features such as automatic seat,
mirror and radio adjustments that could be made before the driver enters the
vehicle.
According to Carlos Cortez, MAES adviser, the students receive valuable
experience writing technical papers and making presentations to help them
develop skills necessary to succeed in the job market.
"These students are bringing national recognition to the university with
the awards they have received over the last three years, and they are setting
the standard for other MAES student chapters to follow," said Cortez.
