UTSA Orchestra to perform with Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan
(Nov. 14, 2002)--The 12-piece, Mexico City-based Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan
will be the featured artists in Ford and Lincoln Mercurys 8th Annual
Mariachi Extravaganza Nov. 22-24 in San Antonio. The world-renowned group,
often called the master's of mariachi, will perform classic and new, original
mariachi songs accompanied by the 65-piece University of Texas at San Antonio
Orchestra.
More than 10,000 mariachi musicians and mariachi aficionados will gather to take part in the three-day event held in San Antonio. The Mariachi Extravaganza is a spectacular and elaborate production of mariachi-related events including an evening with the world renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan in concert, mariachi group and vocal competitions, mariachi music workshops and a mariachi mass at the historical San Jose Mission. The annual event brings together mariachi musicians throughout the Southwestern part of the U.S. and Mexico to celebrate the rich, cultural tradition of mariachi music.
The popularity of mariachi music continues to flourish from generation to generation in the Southwest, where hundreds of students are enrolled in school-based mariachi music programs. The event is an education-based initiative that offers young students the opportunity to learn traditional mariachi music and history by allowing them to interact with Mariachi Vargas during workshops, promoting the best mariachi music talent and exposing the rich, cultural and historical tradition of mariachi music to new audiences.
The event will bring together nearly 1,000 mariachi musicians and 50 mariachi groups to perform throughout the 3-day event, which is part of a multi-city concert tour featuring Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan. The tour is produced by San Antonio-based Munoz Public Relations.
Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster outlets at Foley's or Wherehouse Music, online at Ticketmaster, or Charge-By-Phone at (210) 224-9600.
