New UTSA faculty approach close of first semester

(Nov. 22, 2002)--Forty-eight new tenured and tenure-track faculty joined the University of Texas at San Antonio this fall. The College of Engineering welcomed five faculty members, the College of Sciences added eight assistant professors, the College of Education and Human Development added nine faculty, the College of Liberal and Fine Arts added 17 assistant professors, the College of Public Policy added three faculty and the College of Business hired six tenured and tenure-track faculty members.

The new faculty members in the College of Engineering are: Charles Oswald, assistant professor in civil engineering; Yufei Huang, assistant professor in electrical engineering; Dimitrie Popescu, assistant professor in electrical engineering; Joseph Majdalani, assistant professor in mechanical engineering; and Phillip Chen, professor in electrical engineering.

New assistant professors in the College of Sciences are: David Johnson, chemistry; Candace Coyle, chemistry; Cong-Gui Zhao, chemistry; Chia-Tien Dan Lo, computer science; Qi Tian, computer science; Ki Hwan Yum, computer science; Paul Jurena; earth and environmental science; and Alyson Ponomarenko, earth and environmental science.

The nine new faculty in the College of Education and Human Development are: Bruce Barnett and Encarnacion Garza Jr., professor and assistant professor in educational leadership and policy studies, respectively; Maria Franquiz, associate professor in bicultural-bilingual studies; Bibiana Gutierrez, Michael Karcher and Dianne Robinson, all assistant professors in counseling, educational psychology, adult and higher education; Jennifer Ganz and Hayley Mayall, interdisciplinary studies and curriculum and instruction; and Roberta Beyer, health and kinesiology.

New assistant professors in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts are: Beate Gersch, Deborah Manning, Viviana Rojas, and Elissa Foster, communication department; Sue Hum and Mona Narain, English, classics and philosophy; Gaye Okoh, history; Stacey Davis, Rita Linard and Andrea Yun, music; Kathleen Hancock, Patricia Jaramillo, Mikki Kittilson and Sharon Navarro, political science and government; Gregory Manley and Brenda Hannon, psychology; and Thankam Sunil, sociology.

The College of Public Policy's three new faculty members are: Dianne Rahm, professor in public administration; and Roger Enriquez and Kimberly S. Keller, both assistant professor in criminal justice.

The College of Business welcomes six new faculty members: Austin Reitenga, assistant professor of accounting; Carlos A. Molina, assistant professor of finance; Yiuman Tse, associate professor of finance; Anuradha Roy, assistant professor of management science and statistics; and associate professors of marketing Tina Lowrey and L.J. Shrum.
