Congressman Henry Bonilla meets with TRIO participants
(Oct. 10, 2002)--On Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, United States District 23 Congressman Henry Bonilla visited Eagle Pass, Texas to meet with UTSA TRIO program participants at La Plaza de San Juan. Being a TRIO Alum himself, Congressman Bonilla spoke to the students about his experience as an Educational Talent Search participant with Project Stay in San Antonio and the impact it had on his life. Congressman Bonilla explained the importance of getting an education and staying in school, and more importantly how TRIO programs can help make a difference in going to college. Congressman Bonilla has been instrumental in securing $2 million for the TRIO program housed at UTSA. Congressman Bonilla is often referred to as the champion for the TRIO program for the entire United States.
The TRIO program is a pre-college program that works with first generation,
low-income high school students, serving students in the San Antonio, Del
Rio, Eagle Pass, Crystal City and Uvalde areas. The program includes assistance
to high school dropouts to acquire their GEDs and works with UTSA to increase
retention rates of these students. TRIO helps make college a reality for students
who may have never considered college as an option. For more information on
the TRIO program, visit the TRIO Web
site.
