College of Engineering celebrates 20 years of programs

(Oct. 17, 2002)--A congratulatory crowd gathered at a reception outside the Engineering Building Wednesday afternoon to mark the 20th anniversary of engineering programs at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Joining in the celebration were faculty members from other area universities as well as engineers in Bexar County familiar with UTSA's course offerings.

Among the guests were former mayors Henry Cisneros and Lila Cockrell and Brigadier General Robert McDermott. All three were instrumental in convincing the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to start an engineering program at UTSA in 1974. Over the years, the programs developed and expanded leading to establishment of the College of Engineering in September 2000.

With enrollment of over 1,400, the College of Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Thirteen students are currently enrolled in the new doctoral program in electrical engineering. Two doctoral programs in environmental science and engineering and biomedical engineering were approved by the UT System Board of Regents and will be presented for approval later this year to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

U.S. News and World Report ranks the UTSA College of Engineering program #46 in the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs in the United States and among the top 20 public undergraduate engineering schools.
