Institute of Texan Cultures presents Czech Heritage Day Nov. 3
(Oct. 31, 2002)--Join the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) in celebrating the renovation of the Czech Texan exhibit with polka music, delicious food and colorful excitement that represents Czech heritage in Texas. The opening reception will take place from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 3 on the ITC Exhibit Floor.
ITC and the Texas Czech community have created an exhibit featuring a full-scale Czech kitchen, circa 1935, stocked with artifacts, a walk-in pantry with hands-on replicas of stored goods and interactive audio features. A timeline illustrating the history of Czech culture, a stained glass window from a Czech church and a collection of folk attire, which includes traditional wedding clothes and childrens costumes imported from the Czech Republic, will be on display.
The program will include a Photo Heritage Day, focusing on the life and culture of Czech Texans. The public is encouraged to bring their photo albums and shoeboxes filled with pictures. ITC staff will work with the owner to document the information known about the persons, event or area in the photo. Selected photos will be copied for inclusion in the ITC Photo Archive. Individuals who bring in photos will receive free admission to the days activities.
ITC, one of the three campuses of the University of Texas at San Antonio, is an educational center concerned with the history and diverse cultures of Texas. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., ITC is located in downtown San Antonio. Admission is $5 for adults; $2 for children (3-12); $3 for seniors (65+) and military (with I.D.); and free for children 2 and under and UTSA students, faculty and staff with UTSA ID.
