Grants available to train bilingual teachers, reading specialists

(Oct 14, 2002)--The UTSA bicultural-bilingual studies division has received Department of Education training grants for students who plan to teach second-language learners. Available through Projects Libro and Train, the grants are intended to help reduce a critical need for fully prepared bilingual education and English as a second language (ESL) teachers, in addition to preparing bilingual reading specialists.

Project Libro provides an opportunity for certified teachers to become bilingual reading specialists, either through earning a master of arts degree or by completing a post-master's program. This project will also prepare undergraduates as bilingual generalists with a focus on reading instruction.

Project Train is recruiting students in three different categories: paraprofessionals and normalistas who aspire to become bilingual education teachers; certified secondary content-area teachers who want to become ESL specialists; and individuals who have earned a bachelor of arts degree in a field other than education and who wish to become certified as bilingual elementary or ESL all-level teachers.

Grants will be competitively awarded, and recipients will learn through a combination of performing fieldwork in area schools, mentoring and attending cultural and professional events.

Applicants must be admitted to UTSA to qualify for the training projects. The deadline to apply for university admission is Nov. 1, and the deadline for grant applications is Nov.15. To request a grant application or for more information, call (210) 458-4426.
