Activities of the season set across Tri-Campuses

(Oct. 29, 2002)--As Halloween and El Dia de Los Muertos approach, several events have been planned in observance. Events are free and open to all members of the Tri-Campus community. Following are some highlights:

1604 Campus

Faculty, staff and student leaders will be handing out candy. Noon-1 p.m. Oct. 30 and 31. John Peace Library Building food court.

UTSA Catholic Student Association-sponsored mass and luncheon. Noon Oct. 30. University Center Laurel Room.

Pumpkin-decorating, costume contests. 11:30 a.m. Oct. 31 JPL food court. Be there for both the costume and pumpkin-decorating judging by 11:30 a.m. Pumpkins must NOT be carved. Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries in each contest.

Food drive. All week, JPL food court. Place canned or pre-packaged food items in the collection box, to benefit the local food bank.

El Dia de Los Muertos shrines. All week, University Center. You are invited to bring a photo or another memento that symbolizes a loved one and place it on the altar. Write your name, phone number or office number on the back of each item. Information: Sister Imelda, (210) 699-9594; Alana, (210) 320-2980.

Institute of Texan Cultures

Display of altars/ofrendas. Through Nov. 10, Lower Gallery. Visitors will learn the importance and tradition of El Dia de los Muertos through the altars, a video program and interpretations by ITC docents.

Downtown Campus

Dia de los Muertos Ofrendas. All week, Durango Building Student Center. Several student organizations, including BESO, MASSO, Las Comadres, United Methodist Student Movement and Catholic Student Association-DT will be setting up shrines to remember those who have died.

History of El Dia de Los Muertos. 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Oct. 31, Durango Building Student Center. Presentation by local group.
