Professor to discuss 18th, 19th century American culture

(Oct. 21, 2002)--The UTSA Department of History, the Program in American Studies and the College of Liberal and Fine Arts present "From Monologue to Dialogue: American Studies from the 1930s to the Present," a lecture by David W. Noble, at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in Buena Vista Street Building Room 1.338 at the Downtown Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Noble, a professor of American studies at the University of Minnesota, has published numerous books and articles, spanning a fifty-year career in American studies. His writings focus primarily on the intellectual and cultural development of late nineteenth and early twentieth century America.

His latest book, "Death of a Nation: American Culture and the End of Exceptionalism," explores the ideology of American exceptionalism, arguing that it has been doomed from the outset. The book offers solutions to help scholars avoid romanticized and reductive approaches toward the study of American culture in the future.
