UTSA names new grant development coordinators

(Oct. 24, 2002)--Angelika Rocha and Carlos Cortez were recently named grant development coordinators in the UTSA Office of Research Development. Rocha will coordinate grants in the College of Education and Human Development and the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. Cortez will work with grantwriters in the College of Education, College of Business, Small Business Development Center and Institute of Texan Cultures. The coordinators review grants before they are submitted to ensure compliance with UTSA criteria.

"I look at what I do as helping the university as a whole. Grants will play a significant role in helping UTSA become a top-tier research institution," said Cortez.

Cortez, who has a B.S. in environmental sciences from St. Edward's University in Austin, most recently worked in grant development with the Prefreshman Engineering Program. His projects included school-to-careers grants and the Science Extravaganza.

Rocha has a B.A. in humanities and an M.A. in adult and higher education from UTSA. She was a graduate research assistant for two years and last summer worked with a professor to write a grant to establish a teaching-learning cooperative.

"I describe my new job as 'helping professors help students,'" said Rocha. "We're both looking forward to working closely with UTSA grantwriters."
