UTSA physics professor receives prestigious research award

(Oct. 8, 2002)--University of Texas at San Antonio physics professor Dhiraj Sardar has been awarded the 2003 "Prize to a Faculty Member for Research in an Undergraduate Institution" by the American Physical Society.

The award was established to honor a physicist whose research in an undergraduate setting has achieved wide recognition and contributed significantly to physics, and who has contributed substantially to the professional development of undergraduate physics students.

Sardar was selected for his outstanding research on the interaction of laser light with matter, particularly the spectroscopic characterization of new solid-state media, for his involvement and support of undergraduates in his research, and for his dedication to minority student education.

The American Physical Society has more than 40,000 members and develops and implements effective programs in physics education and outreach. The organization also fosters the health of the profession through its career and development initiatives and its committees on women and minorities.
