UTSA Lyric Theatre to present 'Das Barbecu'

(Sept. 24, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Lyric Theatre presents "Das Barbecu" at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4-5 and 3 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Downtown Campus Buena Vista Street Theater. Set in a variety of locations across present-day Texas, the musical is loosely based on Richard Wagner's four-part 20-hour opera cycle “Der Ring Des Nibelungen,” and is neatly compressed into a two-hour musical comedy.

The story is a fable of love conquering greed set in the Lone Star State. The musical centers on two sets of mismatched lovers who meet on the day of their shotgun double wedding, and three generations of characters from two feuding families. Musical numbers include "Hog-Tie Your Man," "Rodeo Romeo" and "Makin' Guacamole," also including a two-step dance number, "Slide a Little Closer."

The cast of seven will bring to life thirty diverse characters, including heroic cowboys, a psychic, spinster triplets, Texas Rangers, giants, river maidens and Texas society matrons, just to name a few. The UTSA cast includes Annie Gipson, Rosie Osborn, Lisa Arnold, Kim Dowda, Mark Strigham, Stan Moody and Tavis McGeachin.

"Das Barbecu" was originally commissioned by the Seattle Opera in 1991, and was produced by the Goodspeed Opera in Baltimore before landing off-Broadway in the mid-1990s.

The UTSA production will be directed by William McCrary and choreographed by Gloria Liu. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. For more information or for tickets, call (210) 458-5685.
