Buena Vista Street Building, UTSA Downtown Campus
UTSA TechConnect Project hosts second-year celebration
(Sept. 17, 2002)--The UTSA TechConnect Project will have a second-year kick-off celebration Sept. 25 with 5 p.m. demonstrations and displays and 6 p.m. ceremonies at the UTSA Downtown Campus in Buena Vista Street Building Room 1.338. The Department of Education, UTSA and a consortium of local civic, business and education leaders funded the event, "Our Connected Neighborhood," which will open with entertainment and demonstrations of projects produced by students, ranging from elementary-school level to college, using a variety of technology resources. The event is free and open to the public.
Unique in its collaboration and information-sharing across university and public-school boundaries, TechConnect will train 300 P-8 pre-service teachers, 150 field-based supervisors and 150 UTSA College of Education and Human Development faculty. UTSA students and faculty will join with students and teachers from the San Antonio, Harlandale, Northside and Northeast independent school districts in marking year two of a three-year program intended to better prepare student teachers in technology-based instruction, which becomes a mandatory part of the Texas Board of Education certification process this year.

FACT SHEET: UTSA TechConnect Project
IMPLEMENTED: July 2001
DURATION: Three years
FUNDING AMOUNT: $1.1 Million (approximately, $400k per year)
FUNDED BY: U. S. Department of Education; matching funds from UTSA, local partners
PARTNERS: Harlandale, Northeast, Northside and San Antonio ISDs, UTSA, Casio, Apple Computer, University of Western Illinois, LeapFrog SchoolHouse and Inspiration Software.
GOALS: The Tech Connect Project is designed to respond to the needs of faculty and pre-service teachers by facilitating systemic change in UTSA's Teacher Preparation program. This is in response to new state mandates that teacher certification, beginning with the 2002-03 academic year, include a technology component.
By employing a collaborative model permitting increased communication between teacher preparation faculty, pre-service teachers and field-based supervisors, the program permits the university and its consortium partners to establish a common foundation on which instruction can be supported with technology to meet the needs of all students. Due to the dynamic nature of technology, resources and support systems will continue to evolve over the course of the grant activities and beyond.
Through the sustained commitment and leadership of consortium members, efforts will be made to re-think instructional practices as indicated by research, as school access to telecommunication tools and resources increase, and as standards for teacher preparation change.
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Patricia McGee, assistant professor in instructional technology; National Learning Infrastructure Initiative Fellow
CO-PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS: Wanda Hedrick, Leann Steinmetz,
