Touring actors to portray life of artist Frida Kahlo

(Sept. 30, 2002)-- Teatro Milagro, a theatrical touring company which presents bilingual performances, presents the play "Frida, un retablo" at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11 in the Buena Vista Street Building Theater at the UTSA Downtown Campus. Teatro Milagro is part of the Miracle Theatre Group of Portland, Ore.

The play, based on the life of artist Frida Kahlo, is both a visual story of the intricately complex artist and a discussion of the importance of art in the fabric of humanity. Life and art intertwine in the surrealistic vision of one of Mexico's most acclaimed artists. The production portrays old and young versions of the artist who lived from 1907 to 1954.

Edward Lucie-Smith, says in his book "Lives of the Great 20th-Century Artists:" "In 1953, when Frida Kahlo had her first solo exhibition in Mexico (the only one held in her native country during her lifetime), a local critic wrote: 'It is impossible to separate the life and work of this extraordinary person. Her paintings are her biography.' This observation serves to explain both why her work is so different from that of her contemporaries, the Mexican Muralists, and why she has since become a feminist icon.

The production is sponsored by the UTSA Department of English, Classics, and Philosophy and the UTSA Friends of Shakespeare. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students with ID at the University Center ticket office, 1604 Campus, and at the door. All seats are reserved. For more information, call the Department of English, Classics, and Philosophy at (210) 458-4374.
