UTSA adds record number of new faculty

(Sept. 19, 2002)--Fifty tenure-track faculty are joining the University of Texas at San Antonio during the 2002-03 academic year.

Of UTSA's six colleges, the College of Liberal and Fine Arts tops the list with 17 total additions to seven departments. The College of Sciences and College of Education and Human Development each have nine additions; Engineering and Business, six each; and Public Policy, three. These additions bring UTSA’s totals to 450 tenure-track faculty and an additional 575 non-tenure track faculty.

"It's an exciting time for UTSA," said Sandra Welch, UTSA associate vice provost for faculty affairs. "The university's dynamic growth continues, both in terms of enrollment and degree programs offered. Our faculty recruitment effort has also been strengthened by an academic restructuring process completed last year, which expanded our colleges from four to six and reordered our academic divisional structure into more traditional discipline-based departments."

"The departmental structure affords greater visibility and recognition for specific disciplines and programs, which is important to prospective faculty,” she added.

Enrollment at UTSA for the fall 2002 semester surpassed 22,000. The university currently offers 53 undergraduate, 35 graduate and seven doctoral degree programs, with additional programs under development.
