UTSA ceremonies mark anniversary of Sept. 11 events
(Sept. 11, 2002)--Several observances today at the UTSA tri-campuses reflected on last year's Sept. 11 attacks. An educational seminar and a dramatic presentation at the 1604 Campus, and ceremonies at each of the three UTSA campuses provided opportunities to discuss issues surrounding the attacks, affirm citizenship and honor those who died.
The UTSA Department of History and the American Studies Program sponsored the seminar "Re-thinking 9/11: Critical Responses and Artistic Perspectives" in the Multidisciplinary Studies Building Kiva at the 1604 Campus. The seminar included panel and small-group discussions and poetry readings. The Institute of Texan Cultures presented "Day of Remembrance and Recommitment," which included a swearing-in ceremony for new citizens and the opportunity for others to restate their oaths as U.S. citizens.
Memorial ceremonies were conducted at the Downtown and 1604 campuses at noon. Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Programs, ceremonies were held at the Sombrilla on the 1604 Campus, and at the Frio Street Building Portal at the Downtown Campus.
Ceremonies included presentation of the colors, a moment of silence, music and a request for submission of ideas for two permanent 9/11 memorials at the Downtown and 1604 campuses. The UTSA Women's Choir sang at the 1604 Campus and the UTSA Flute Ensemble performed at the Downtown Campus.
Additionally, UTSA international students paid tribute to the American spirit with words, song and dance in the presentation "The American Spirit: A Portrait of Freedom and Unity" in the University Center Retama Auditorium at the 1604 Campus.
Students, faculty and staff are invited to submit
ideas for the permanent 9/11 memorials until the Nov. 11, 2002 deadline.
Two design plans will be selected by Sept. 11 program organizers and UTSA
administrators, and the final plan will be determined by a vote of the student
body in March 2003.
