UTSA awarded $406,000 in technology funds

(Sept. 30, 2002)-- The University of Texas San Antonio received a $406,000 grant from the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF) Board of Texas that will be used to help increase the participation rate of minority students attending college by using distance learning technology.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s plan “Closing the Gaps” established goals for all of the state’s higher education institutions emphasizing four major themes: participation, success, excellence and research. The grant initiative recommended strategies in which distance learning technology can help accomplish some of these goals.

UTSA will use the grant to create an on-line “Introduction to Technology” course to expose high school students to the benefits of a college education, while helping to close the gap in participation rates among chronically under-represented populations in Texas. The grant project builds on the success of “College 101,” the UTSA distance learning course developed as part of the 2001 TIF Discovery Grant “Increasing Technology Utilization: Closing the Distance to College Entrance” that connected UTSA to 10 middle and high schools throughout the San Antonio region.

“The course focuses on understanding the technology behind computers and teaches the necessary computational skills that lead to technology literacy,” said Bill Angrove, project director. “As a result, students will be prepared to use the information technology tools that are necessary for success in higher education.”

Since its creation by the 74th Legislature in 1995, TIF has awarded approximately $1.2 billion in telecommunications grants to school districts and charter schools, two and four-year colleges and universities, public libraries and branches, public and not-for-profit healthcare facilities, innnovative Discovery collaboratives, and community network collaborations.
