U.S. News ranks engineering college #46 in the nation

(Sept. 23, 2002)-- U.S. News and World Report has ranked the University of Texas at San Antonio College of Engineering program #46 in the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs in the United States. The rankings are based on surveys of deans and senior faculty conducted last spring.

The magazine ranks schools with at least one engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Schools with accredited engineering programs are placed in one of two categories: those offering doctoral engineering degrees and those offering bachelor's or master's degrees.

"We are certainly excited to see that U.S. News and World Report has recognized the efforts of students, faculty and staff by ranking the College of Engineering in the top 46 engineering undergraduate schools in the nation and among the top 20 public undergraduate engineering schools," said Zorica Pantic-Tanner, dean of the UTSA College of Engineering. "This ranking reflects an improvement over last year's 50th place, and underscores our commitment to academic excellence, innovative research and ongoing efforts to support and foster entrepreneurship and technology transfer."

With enrollment of over 1,400, the College of Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Thirteen students are currently enrolled in the new doctoral program in electrical engineering. Two doctoral programs in environmental science and engineering and biomedical engineering were approved by the UT System Board of Regents and will be presented for approval later this year to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
