Brownsville Mayor Blanca Vela with UTSA students from Brownsville

UTSA students and administrators host 'Brownsville Day'

(April 17, 2003)--University of Texas at San Antonio President Ricardo Romo proclaimed today "Brownsville Day at UTSA" during a luncheon with Brownsville Mayor Blanca Vela. The luncheon was followed by a reception at the UTSA 1604 Campus.

"UTSA represents a wonderful opportunity for the Brownsville community," said Vela. "My own daughter is a UTSA graduate."

Joining the mayor for the event was a delegation of Brownsville officials including school superintendents and administrators, representatives from the Brownsville Convention and Visitors Bureau and UTSA students from Brownsville.

"UTSA students from Brownsville and the surrounding area include some of our brightest scholars and campus leaders," said Romo. "Celebrating 'Brownsville Day' at the university recognizes the importance of higher education to this entire region and the future of the State of Texas."

The event is part of UTSA's South Texas Community Initiative, which visits South Texas communities with college-age students. By recruiting more students from the region, UTSA hopes to close the gap between those who receive higher education in underrepresented communities and those who do not.

Currently, there are more than 400 Brownsville students attending UTSA. The university ranks first in the country among all public and private schools for preparing Hispanic students for careers in biology and the life sciences.
