COLFA announces endowed scholarship honoring Richard Adams

(April 24, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio's College of Liberal and Fine Arts has announced the Richard E.W. Adams Endowed Scholarship. A plaque commemorating the new scholarship will be placed in the foyer of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building at the UTSA 1604 Campus.

The scholarship that will be awarded to archaeology graduate students honors Professor of Anthropology Richard Adams for his contributions to the field of archaeology and the UTSA Department of Anthropology.

Pictured with the commemorative plaque are (front row, left to right): James McDonald, interim chair of anthropology and Daniel Gelo, interim dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. In the back row (from left to right) are Adams and Tom O'Brien, COLFA Advisory Council member.

With more than 45 years of experience in the field, Adams has brought national and international recognition to UTSA with more than 100 published items, including five books he authored. He served as the first dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in the late 1970s and also helped develop the UTSA undergraduate anthropology programs.

In 2002, Adams was named an Ashbel Smith Professor, the highest honor a faculty member at UTSA can receive.
