Wordfest spotlights works of UTSA students and faculty
(April 28, 2003)--UTSA's first annual Wordfest was enthusiastically received the evening of April 18 in the Business Building University Room by an audience of students, faculty and friends.
Pictured are Wendy Barker (at center with striped vest), UTSA professor of English, classics and philosophy, with event participants.
Recipients of the first Wendy Barker Creative Writing Award read from their own work; Brian Dickson received the first-place award and Linda Winterbottom received second place.
The donor for the awards, Jerald Winakur, opened the evening with a short reading of his own poems.
Also reading from their work were Michael Stewart, recipient of the Ruth Bohn-Weisman Scholarship in Creative Writing, and Christina Misite, recipient of the Davidson-Shaddox Scholarship in Creative Writing.
Linda Woodson, chair of the Department of English, Classics and Philosophy, presided over the event, which also featured readings by faculty members Norma Cantu, Catherine Kasper, Ben Olguin, and Barker.
