Congressman Henry Bonilla hosts art competition at UTSA

(April 8, 2003)--The office of Congressman Henry Bonilla will host its annual 23rd Congressional District Art Competition from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 12, in the John Peace Library Building Regents' Room (4.03.12) on the UTSA 1604 Campus. The artwork was submitted by high school students in the 23rd Congressional District. Bonilla will attend the awards ceremony on Saturday.

The UTSA community is invited to view the artwork from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 11, in the Regents' Room.

"This is an excellent opportunity for students across the 23rd district to show off their talent and creativity. Who knows -- we may discover a Norman Rockwell or Georgia O'Keefe amongst us. At the very least, hundreds of young adults will find a new passion for the arts," said Bonilla.

"Last year's competition produced some amazing artwork. I'm already looking forward to meeting this year's artists," said Bonilla. "I'm also excited to see some of their artwork hanging in the halls of the U.S. Capitol."

Conducted annually in congressional districts across the nation, the competition is designed to highlight the creative spirit of America's high school art students and to encourage their artistic endeavors.

Prizes for the students range from a $12,000 scholarship ($3,000-per-year) to the Savannah School of Art and Design, three round-trip tickets to Washington, D.C., and savings bonds.

Artwork will be judged by a panel selected from the art community. Prizes for the top three places will be awarded, as well as two honorable mentions. The winning work of art will be sent to Washington, D.C., for display in a corridor of the U.S. Capitol alongside winning artwork from across the country.

Bonilla has represented the 23rd Congressional District of Texas since 1992. This is his fourth year hosting the art competition.
