Dolph Briscoe
Former Texas governor to speak April 8 for Frost lecture series
(April 2, 2003)--Former Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe will present the keynote address during the Frost Bank Distinguished Lecture Series at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, in The University of Texas at San Antonio Business Building Auditorium (2.01.02). The event is sponsored by the College of Business and is free and open to the public.
The Uvalde native has enjoyed a distinguished career as a politician, rancher and community leader. From 1973-1979, Briscoe served as the governor of Texas and under his leadership kept his campaign promise of no new or additional state taxes during his term.
Prior to serving as governor, Briscoe was president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers' Association and was instrumental in raising $3 million in voluntary contributions to encourage the federal and state governments to launch a screwworm eradication program in Texas and the Southwest. The successful program is considered by livestock growers to be the most important and beneficial development in the history of the industry, saving livestock producers millions of dollars annually.
Briscoe's political career began in 1949 as a member of the Texas Legislature and he is credited for passing legislation to establish a farm-to-market program that helped pull farmers out of muddy roadways and eventually led to the development of rural Texas.
Briscoe chaired the Fighting Back program for United Way of San Antonio, Agri Food Education Council, the Agribusiness Committee of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the Engineering and Biotech Initiative for The University of Texas at San Antonio.
The Frost Bank Distinguished Lecture Series brings prominent business and community leaders to UTSA to share their knowledge and experiences with students and others in the university and business communities. The lecture series, which began in 1988, presents an opportunity to broaden understanding of the business world and the individuals who lead it.
The UTSA College of Business is accredited by AACSB International, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. It is one of the 40 largest business schools in the nation with more than 5,100 enrolled students and 37 graduate and undergraduate programs.
