UTSA to host special commencement for Summer 2003 graduates
(April 4, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio will hold a special
commencement ceremony to accommodate August 2003 graduation candidates at
6 p.m. Friday, May 9, in the UTSA Convocation Center. Keynote speaker will
be Alan Craven, professor in the Department of English, Classics and
Philosophy.
The ceremony will honor August graduates who may not be able to attend a December
2003 ceremony. A proposed August 2003 ceremony was cancelled due to budget
constraints. The May 9 ceremony is a cost-effective option because the Convocation
Center will already be prepared for May 10 commencement ceremonies.
The May 9 ceremony will combine all colleges and August 2003 graduates in
one ceremony, rather than conducting three ceremonies as in other UTSA commencements.
Students graduating in August 2003 have the option of participating in the
May 9 ceremony or their December 2003 college ceremony.
Students expecting to graduate in August 2003 must file a graduation application
at the Office of Fiscal Services by April 25 in order to participate in the
May 9 ceremony. The Office of the Registrar will determine eligibility for
August 2003 graduation by verifying good academic standing and that candidates
could have enough credit hours for August 2003 graduation. Applicants will
be notified if it is determined they are ineligible for August 2003 graduation.
When students apply to participate in the May 9 ceremony, they will receive
a packet including a participation form. The form must be submitted by April
30 to Graduation Coordination in the Office of the Registrar. Packets will
be mailed to students who have already applied for August 2003 graduation.
Participation in the May 9 ceremony does not guarantee that a student has
met all degree requirements. Final degree clearance for August 2003 graduates
will be processed after grades have been reported for the Summer 2003 semester.
At that time, students meeting degree requirements will be awarded the degree
and university honors will be conferred if applicable. The names of graduates
will be included in the December 2003 commencement program that will be available
from the Office of the Registrar following the December 2003 ceremonies.
UTSA Bookstores has made special arrangements for August 2003 degree candidates
to order regalia and announcements. A special Grad Fest will be held April
22 at the UTSA Bookstores to offer an opportunity to order graduation items.
Announcements ordered at the Grad Fest will allow participants to avoid a
rush fee.
