UTSA engineering professor receives NSF career award
(April 9, 2003)--University of Texas at San Antonio Assistant Professor Chunjiang Qian received a $400,000 five-year grant from the National Science Foundation for his work in electrical and computer engineering.
The career award is NSF's most prestigious honor for junior faculty members and is designed to support exceptionally promising college and university faculty members who are committed to the integration of research and education.
Qian, who joined UTSA in September 2001, will focus on developing new design
methods for a variety of control problems and applying the findings to mechanical
systems, mobile robots, induction motors and communication systems.
The award will help build a research laboratory for use by undergraduate and
graduate students which will expose the students to the latest research techniques
and help bridge the gap between theoretical research and engineering practice.
Qian received his doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science
from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned a bachelor's
degree in mathematics and a master's degree in control theory from Fudan University,
Shanghai, China.
