UTSA students place in Battle of Flowers oratorical contest
(April 18, 2003)--Two UTSA students were winners in the 78th annual Battle of Flowers Association Oratorical Contest. The theme of this year's contest was "Barbed Wire: The Taming of Texas."
Brett Owen, UTSA communication major, placed second in the contest winning $1,000 and Jamie Furrh, UTSA philosophy major, placed fifth to win a $300 prize.
The speech contest, open to all Texas college students, is based on perpetuating appreciation of the history of Texas. The theme each year is based on facts and ideals of early Texas history.
