UTSA senior debaters Jeremy Stevens and Kate Richey

Two UTSA debaters selected for All-American squad

(April 22, 2003)--As the 2002-03 debate season drew to a close, the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) had good news for two UTSA debaters. Seniors Kate Richey and Jeremy Stevens were chosen by the CEDA Awards Committee to be members of the CEDA All-American Squad.

The awards were announced at the CEDA National Championship Debate Tournament held at Arizona State University in Tempe over spring break. The tournament hosted 194 teams from 91 universities and colleges nationwide.

Richey was picked, along with 29 other debaters, as an All-American debater. Over her debate career, she won numerous awards, including the Pi Kappa Delta National Championship while she was a member of the Abilene Christian University debate squad. She transferred to UTSA in 2001 and will graduate in May with a major in political science. Richey plans to attend law school.

Stevens also was inducted into the Academic All-American Squad at the Arizona State debate conclave. He transferred from Dartmouth College in 2000, and he has won many debate awards for UTSA. Stevens will graduate in May with a major in computer science. Next season, he will work as a debate coach for Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

Last year, he and debate partner Richey placed seventh in the national tournament where Stevens won the 17th speaker position. Richey and Stevens finished the 2002-03 debate season ranked 41st out of 424 senior level debate teams nationwide.
