Leadership Award: Mary Alice Cervantes-Hample is role model

(April 9, 2003)--Mary Alice Cervantes-Hample, assistant to the dean of the UTSA College of Sciences, will be honored with the Leadership Award, one of five presented next week at the UTSA Staff Excellence Awards ceremony.

All UTSA staff members are invited to attend the event hosted by President Ricardo Romo at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in the University Center Laurel Room (2.01.28). Downtown Campus and Institute of Texan Cultures staff members can attend the event utilizing VIA bus 94 at no charge by showing their UTSACard.

The Leadership Award recognizes a staff member who demonstrates strong leadership skills and commitment to UTSA, serves as a role model for his or her colleagues and promotes the university's goals through actions and job performance.

The ceremony will include other staff recognition, 5-35 year service pin recipients and refreshments. Twenty-four staff members will be honored on their retirements and nearly 200 staff members will receive service awards. Service awards are for the 2002 calendar year.

The five Staff Excellence Awards recognize excellent work performance in emerging leadership, dynamic leadership, teamwork, extraordinary initiative and overall excellence. The awards are: Rising Star Award, Leadership Award, Team Spirit Award, Extra Mile Award and Order of the Roadrunner Award.

Mary Alice Cervantes-Hample
Leadership Award winner

Cervantes-Hample earned a B.B.A. from the UTSA College of Business in 1978 and has worked in the College of Sciences dean's office since 1979. She began as an administrative assistant and has advanced to her present position as assistant to the dean.

In a time of rapid growth and change, Cervantes-Hample's historical knowledge of the college has helped administrators to plan for the future. When people are in need of information or assistance, she is frequently the person to whom they are referred. Her experience, reputation, positive attitude and personality have earned her the respect of faculty, staff and students within the college and across the UTSA community.

Her participation in activities at UTSA includes the College of Sciences Advisory Council, reviewing of credentials for UTSA re-accreditation, staff coordinator for the UTSA 25th anniversary celebration, helping to organize a yearlong series of UTSA tours to create new community interest in the university, planning for the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Engineering and Biosciences Buildings and helping to plan several UTSA United Way campaigns. Additionally, Cervantes-Hample is active in the community in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and church activities.

Her strong leadership role is illustrated by the energy and initiative with which she carries out her work. She is an outstanding role model for staff and is always willing to assist them. She helps facilitate a productive, flexible and accommodating office culture and is committed to helping administrators achieve the UTSA goal of becoming a premier research institution.
