UTSA hosts lecture by Peruvian theater director

(April 8, 2003)--The UTSA Culture and Policy Institute will host a lecture by Bruno Ortiz Leon, acclaimed Peruvian theater director, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, in the Durango Building Southwest Room (1.124) at the UTSA Downtown Campus.

Leon will discuss cultural memory and its influence on the New Peruvian Theater.

The lecture will be presented in Spanish and English and accompanied by photographs and video.

The coordinator of research, montage and artistic diffusion for the Producciones theater arts group in Lima, Peru, Leon has directed such productions as "Las Dardano," a work based on the 13 tragedies of Eurypides that, according to Leon, "reclaims the discourse of matriarchy;" "The Revolution," a work that examines gay and lesbian relations; and "The Night Before Combat," a play developed in collaboration with an autistic and Down's syndrome theater group.

He co-directed "The Cult of the Ancestors," a pre-Incan ceremonial piece.
