Sonia Martinez named VP for university advancement

(April 10, 2003)--UTSA President Ricardo Romo has named Sonia Martinez as vice president for university advancement. A native Texan, she has served as executive director of development since March of last year.

As vice president for university advancement, she will be responsible for all development efforts, university communications and alumni relations for the university. UTSA's vice president for administration, Gerard Barloco, was serving as interim vice president for university advancement.

"Sonia Martinez has demonstrated the combination of experience and expertise needed to lead university relations efforts at UTSA," Romo said. "As UTSA moves toward tier-one status, it is important that we have an experienced advancement professional who can lead our efforts to promote the university and recruit essential resources to augment our ability to serve San Antonio and South Texas."

Martinez, who assumed her new responsibilities April 10, said, "I am very excited about the opportunity to lead university advancement at UTSA and to enhancing the university's many partnerships within the community. A major metropolitan university such as UTSA is a wonderful catalyst for making exciting things happen for a region, and as we engage more and more individuals, corporations and organizations in the life of UTSA, our students and the community at large will be the beneficiaries."

Before coming to UTSA, Martinez, an electrical engineer who holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a master's degree from the University of California at Berkely, served as director of corporate relations for the College of Engineering at UT Austin.

She managed relationships and projects associated with more than 200 high-tech and petrochemical corporations that contributed $20 million annually to the College of Engineering. Her personal fund-raising efforts netted the college another $2 million in grants each year.

Throughout the 1990s, Martinez also directed UT Austin's equal opportunity program for minority students in engineering, overseeing outreach, recruitment, advising, counseling and student success programs.

Prior to joining UT Austin, she spent six years as a hardware and custom-device design engineer for AT&T Bell Laboratories. She also worked for IBM and Hewlett-Packard.
