UTSA sets schedules for Battle of Flowers Day, summer office hours

(April 17, 2003)--Due to a decision to keep offices and services at The University of Texas at San Antonio open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday this summer, the university will implement a flexible scheduling system and adjust a previously adopted holiday schedule to accommodate individuals who have already arranged holiday plans.

"Originally we intended that UTSA would implement a four-and-a-half-day summer schedule as we have done for a number of years. As a result we scheduled the afternoon of Friday, April 25, to be a half-day holiday for Battle of Flowers Day," said Jerry Barloco, vice president for administration.

"Due to the need to keep an increasing number of offices open five days a week in the summer, we do not have enough State-allotted holiday hours remaining to make the afternoon of the 25th a holiday. Knowing that some staff members have made Fiesta plans, we have made adjustments to allow for those individuals to be off that afternoon."

To allow individuals the ability to attend the Battle of Flowers Parade, staff members may -- working with their supervisor and vice president -- adjust their schedule. All offices, though, need to remain open with at least a skeleton crew.

Options are:

  1. Staff members at UTSA may work a four-and-a-half-day week April 21 through 25 (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and 8 a.m. to noon Friday).
  2. Staff members may use annual leave or floating holiday time for the afternoon of April 25, 2003.

As for the Summer 2003 schedule, staff members can adjust their schedules with vice presidential approval to continue working the four-and-a-half-day week as long as their office remains open with a skeleton crew.

"We know that there are some staff members at UTSA who prefer the four-and-a-half-day schedule in the summer, so we have obtained approval from UT System to implement a flexible scheduling system,” Barloco said. (See Section B in Handbook of Operating Procedures 4.29.)

Barloco said that UTSA originally implemented the schedule to save money due to energy savings from using less energy for air conditioning and lighting on Friday afternoons. "That savings has nearly disappeared as more and more offices need to stay open to provide essential services," Barloco added.
