Institute of Texan Cultures exhibit tells story of Tejano pioneers

(Aug. 7, 2003)--"A Tejano Son of Texas," an exhibit on the Tejano pioneers of Texas, is on display through Oct. 27 at the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) in downtown San Antonio.

Sponsored by the City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs, and created and sponsored by TexasTejano.com, the life of a surveyor, scout, Indian fighter, ranchman and Texas Ranger are reflected in the exhibit about Jose Policarpio Rodriguez.

"We are pleased to have the premiere of our traveling exhibit at the Institute of Texan Cultures. We feel that this partnership can only increase the awareness of the diverse cultures of Texas Tejanos and will help to bring long-overdue validation to their legacies," said Rudi Rodriguez, president of TejanoTexas.com.

ITC will host a reception for the exhibit from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the ITC. The community is invited to view the exhibit, watch historical reenactments and learn about the mission of TexasTejano.com.

TexasTejano.com researches Texas Tejano history to bring awareness and education to the general public through publications, electronic media, exhibits and events about the contributions of Tejano pioneers to Texas.

The City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs provides leadership, resources and support for arts and cultural organizations and individual artists, enhancing the quality of life for San Antonio Citizens and visitors.

One of three University of Texas at San Antonio campuses, the ITC is an educational center focusing on Texas history and cultures. Admission fees (effective Aug. 12) are $6.50, adults; $3, children (3-12 years); $4, seniors (65 years or older); $4, military personnel with ID; and free, members, UTSA students and employees and children 2 years and under.

Institute of Texan Cultures hours of operation are (effective Aug. 15) are Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Birthday parties and special events are available. For more information, call 210-458-2330.
