UTSA Satellite Space exhibit features paintings 'guided by intuition'

(Aug. 13, 2003)--The UTSA Satellite Space presents "Graphic Eloquence: Paintings by Jeff Elrod and Steve Roden" Sept. 5-21. The exhibit represents the first time that paintings by these two artists, who do not know each other, have been seen together.

An opening reception for the exhibit is from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 4. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Pictured are (top) "Delete," 2003, acrylic on canvas, 84 by 72 inches, by Jeff Elrod and (bottom) "The Silent World," 2002, oil on linen, 16 by 22 inches, by Steve Roden.

Selected by Frances Colpitt, chair of the UTSA Department of Art and Art History and professor of art history and criticism, the exhibit includes recent paintings by Los Angeles artist Steve Roden and former Houston artist Jeff Elrod, who currently lives and works in New York.

Among the most interesting young painters emerging on the east and west coasts, both artists have been acclaimed in the international art press and have extensive exhibition records.

Elrod's works have been included in solo shows at the Texas Gallery in Houston and the Pat Hearn and Leo Koenig galleries in New York, as well as Paolo Curti & Co. in Milan.

Roden's work was recently featured in solo exhibitions at the Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects and the Pomona College Museum of Art in California. He has also shown in New York, Germany, Italy, France and Japan.

According to Colpitt, "their abstract paintings privilege the wandering hand, guided by intuition yet limited by a self-imposed system or the filter of technology."

While their works differ in scale and intensity of color, they share a commitment to language and drawing with the brush as a form of communication.

The UTSA Satellite Space is located at 115 Blue Star in the Blue Star Arts Complex on South Alamo Street at Probandt Street. Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday or by appointment.

For more information, contact the Satellite Space at 210-212-7146 or the Department of Art and Art History at 210-458-4391.

The UTSA Satellite Space receives major support from The University of Texas at San Antonio; the UTSA College of Liberal and Fine Arts; the UTSA Department of Art and Art History; and Bruce and Janet Lennie Flohr.
