UTSA history professor publishes book on champagne industry

(Aug. 4, 2003)--UTSA Associate Professor of History Kolleen Guy recently published her first book with Johns Hopkins University Press. Part of the Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science series, "When Champagne Became French: Wine and the Making of a National Identity" is the first modern scholarly study of the production, consumption and representation of champagne, tracing the links between the famous sparkling wine and the formation of French national identity between 1820 and 1920.

W. Scott Haine, University of Maryland University College scholar and author of "The World of the Paris Cafe," describes Guy's book as "both inviting and accessible, deftly integrating theories from sociology, anthropology, philosophy, economics and cultural history in a coherent, persuasive and analytical narrative. 'When Champagne Became French' is both scholarly and readable."

Winner of the Outstanding Manuscript Award from Phi Alpha Theta, the work offers a new perspective by looking at one of the central elements in French national culture -- luxury wine -- and the rural communities that profited from its production. Guy examines the relationship between champagne, class distinction and French identity.
