UTSA Women's Studies Institute hosts Latina student conference

(Aug. 12, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Women's Studies Institute hosted the Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (MALCS) 2003 Summer Institute and Conference August 10-12 at the Downtown Campus.

This year's conference spotlighted the new Adelante! Focus on Math, Science and Engineering Project, which centers on increasing the number of Latinas pursuing doctoral degrees in math, science and engineering.

Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, the project involves senior faculty members sharing their current research and career achievements, and offering advice to students.

"The annual Mujeres Activas conference has always provided a space for Chicanas in the academy to gather and share their work, and this event with its target on Latina and Chicana students in all disciplines energizes and supports our future intellectuals, cultural workers, scientists and professors," said Norma Cantu, 2003 MALCS site committee chair and UTSA English professor.

MALCS is an organization of Chicana, Latina and Native American women working in academia and community settings who have the common goal of providing education and support regarding women's issues. Women from a variety of institutions gather at the institute to network, share information, offer support and re-energize.

The MALCS conference included special events throughout San Antonio including a reading by renowned writer Sandra Cisneros and a performance of "The Panza Project," a play about Latinas in the style of "The Vagina Monologues" at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center.
