
Roadrunners take over first place with 68-54 win
(Feb. 7, 2003)--UTSA juniors Nikki Hendrix and Dewella Holliday combined for 23 second-half points to lift the Roadrunners to a 68-54 win over Northwestern (La.) State and sole possession of first place in the Southland Conference.

The win was UTSA's (9-9, 9-2) eighth straight victory and moved them a game ahead of Northwestern State, Stephen F. Austin and Texas-Arlington in the SLC standings. Northwestern State is 11-7 and 8-3.
UTSA broke the game open early with a 15-0 run as they led 23-7 with 8:27 to play in the first half. Reserves Lyndsey Greer and Katie Sandefur combined for 10 of the Roadrunners' first 19 points. Meanwhile, Northwestern State went 2-for-14 from the field in the first 11:00 of the game.
Hendrix led all scorers with 19 points and Holliday added 17. Guard Kim Reed had 10 points and eight rebounds. Northwestern State was led by Angela Davidson's 15 points and 11 rebounds. Katrina Swanigan added 13 points.
UTSA led 31-18 at halftime despite playing without starting center Tanisha Jackson who picked up two fouls in the first 3:00 of the game. In the second half, Northwestern State trailed by as many as 19, 43-24, with 16:46 to play of a layup by Holliday, but the Lady Demons rallied to trim the lead to eight, 50-42, after two Davidson free throws with 9:43 to play.
UTSA responded with a 12-6 spurt to lead 62-48 after a Holliday free throw with 4:08 to play.
