Works of Sir Malcolm Arnold featured in New Music Festival

(Feb. 18, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Music presents the annual New Music Festival at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19-21 at the 1604 Campus Arts Building Recital Hall.

As in years past, the repertoire presented in the series of three performances will feature celebrated works of 20th century classical composers as well as newer works and a world premiere.

Thursday's performance will feature large ensemble works of Sir Malcolm Arnold. Born in 1921, Arnold is one of the most fluent and versatile composers of his generation. His prolific work comprises symphonies, concerti, chamber music, stage works, choral music, song cycles and music for wind and brass band. His catalog of over a hundred scores for film and television includes the Oscar-winning "Bridge on the River Kwai."

The UTSA Orchestra will perform "Peterloo Overture," the UTSA Wind Ensemble will perform "A Grand, Grand Overture" and the UTSA Concert Choir will perform "Song of Praise" and "Psalm CL, 'Laudate Dominum.'"

Wednesday's performance will highlight chamber music works by Lowell Liebermann, William Albright, Michael Nyman and James Mobberley. Special guest artists include the San Antonio Brass and William James Ross.

Special guest artists Aura, the Moores School of Music Contemporary Ensemble from the University of Houston, will perform works by Henry Cowell, Tom Lopez, Witold Lutoslawski, Matt Ingalls and others on Friday night.
