UTSA names new director of biomedical engineering

(Feb. 10, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio has named C. Mauli Agrawal as director of the new graduate program in biomedical engineering established in collaboration with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The program was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Jan. 30.

Agrawal will also serve as associate dean for research and graduate studies of the UTSA College of Engineering. He joins UTSA with 12 years of experience at UTHSCSA where he continues as professor of orthopaedics and director of the center for clinical bioengineering.

"I am very excited that Dr. Agrawal has joined UTSA and will be at the helm of the BME program," said Zorica Pantic-Tanner, dean of the UTSA College of Engineering. "He is internationally known for his work in biomedical engineering and I am proud to have him on our faculty."

"The new BME program is truly a joint effort between UTSA and UTHSCSA and I am honored that President Romo and President Cigarroa have given me the opportunity to lead this endeavor," said Agrawal.

Before joining UTHSCSA in 1991, Agrawal served for a year in the biomedical engineering department at Duke University in Durham, N.C., where he received his doctoral degree. Agrawal. earned his master's degree in mechanical engineering from Clemson University and his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India.

Internationally known for his work, Agrawal has delivered more than 50 invited lectures in the U.S. and abroad, including invited talks at NASA and NATO conferences. Agrawal is active in the Society for Biomaterials, the premier professional society for implant materials with representation from more than 30 countries. In 2001, he chaired the annual scientific meeting of the international organization and was elected to its board.

Agrawal has published more than 200 scientific publications and 18 patents and edited two books. In addition to his publications, he has supervised the research of more than 30 post-doctoral research fellows, medical residents and graduate students. Additionally, he serves on the editorial board of 3 international scientific journals and acts as a reviewer for 10 others. He chaired a study section for two years at the National Institutes of Health and frequently reviews applications for National Science Foundation grants.

This month at special ceremony at the National Academy of Sciences, Agrawal will be formally inducted as a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
