F.A.C.E.S. presents National Sexual Responsibility Week
(Feb. 7, 2003)--The UTSA student organization F.A.C.E.S. (Finding Awareness by Creating Educated Students) presents "Sex, Leis and Video Tape" in observance of National Sexual Responsibility Week from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11 at the Downtown Campus Frio Street Building Commons.
At the 1604 Campus, "Sex, Leis and Videotape" will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13 at the Humanities and Social Science Building paseo.
The events will feature music, information and give-away items. At both events, the START Center (Southwest Texas Addiction Research and Technology Center) of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Planned Parenthood will provide information and F.A.C.E.S. will sell condom leis for $1.
F.A.C.E.S. and Planned Parenthood will present "Sex in the Dark" from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 11 in the study lounge at Chisholm Hall. Come and learn everything you always wanted to know about sex -- but were afraid to ask. Free snacks will be provided.

UTSA capitalized inventory threshold raised to $5,000
(Feb. 7, 2003)--UTSA has received approval to change its capitalization threshold from $1,000 to $5,000. The increase was effective Sept. 1, 2002.
Equipment that is acquired for costs less than $5,000 and is not controlled will not require inventory identification tags. This threshold change applies only to "capitalized items." Thresholds for controlled items and art remain unchanged.
Controlled equipment such as computers, DVD players and other electronic items are still required to be inventory ID-tagged at costs beginning at $500. Art and firearms are required to be tagged and recorded regardless of cost.

UTSA hosts Junior Academy of Science competition
(Feb. 7, 2003)--The Alamo Regional Academy of Science and Engineering presents the Junior Academy of Science Fair from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 8 in the University Center Laurel Room at the UTSA1604 Campus. Student registration begins in the University Center lobby at 7:45 a.m.
More than 250 students representing 32 middle and high schools in the San Antonio area will compete in 13 categories for awards and scholarships. The students, who have utilized the scientific process in conducting an experiment, will defend the results in 12-minute oral arguments before members of the scientific community. The top students from each category will advance to the state Junior Academy of Science.
The awards ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9 in the Business Building Auditorium (Room 2.01.02).

John Peace Library fire suppression system renovated
(Feb. 7, 2003)--UTSA's John Peace Library is undergoing the installation of a state-mandated fire suppression system. The construction on this phase of the remodeling project will last through the second summer session. Contactors will work mostly during hours in which the library is closed, but may begin preliminary set-up as early as 9 p.m.
Access to certain sections of the library may be restricted between 9 p.m. and 12 a.m., but all areas will remain accessible during other regular service hours. Library staff will retrieve materials from the restricted access areas upon request at the reference desk.

Director of tourism management program named to city committee
(Feb. 7, 2003)--Tom Cannon, director of UTSA's tourism management program in the College of Business, was recently appointed by City of San Antonio City Manager Terry Brechtel to the selection committee for director of the City of San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The selection committee is comprised of several assistant city managers, the director of economic development, the director of the convention center and the chairman of the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau Commission.
San Antonio's tourism industry is the city's second largest industry, generating annual revenues of $4 billion and employing 79,000.
