UTSA tri-campuses closed Feb. 25 due to icy weather

(Feb. 25, 2003)--All UTSA campuses and classes are closed for the day due to the inclement weather conditions. The campuses and classes will be open tomorrow unless icy conditions remain in the San Antonio area.

As of 3:15 p.m., the "Great Conversation!" fund-raiser is canceled due to the weather. The event was scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Institute of Texan Cultures.

For the latest information on UTSA closings, call (210) 458-SNOW (7669).

Early this morning all San Antonio broadcast media were notified that the three UTSA campuses (1604, Downtown and Institute of Texan Cultures) would be closed until noon, and that classes would begin at 12:30 p.m. The decision was based on early forecasts that the temperature would go above freezing this morning.

When the temperature remained below freezing, the decision was made to close the university for the entire day. Local media were then notified of the revised closing plan.

According to UTSA Police Chief George Powers, the decision-making process for closing or delaying the opening of campuses begins at approximately 4 a.m.

"Many factors enter into the decision," Powers said, "but in the end the safety and well-being of students, faculty and staff are the ultimate motivation."

"I begin checking television broadcasts and weather-related Web sites for road closures and other data to be considered," said Powers. "Once the most current information is gathered, I contact the vice president for business affairs, who confers with the president to make a decision."

When the decision is made, the business affairs vice president informs Powers, who then notifies the assistant vice president for communications. If a decision is made to close, the communications office notifies local media and the 458-SNOW message is updated.
