Diploma Dash 5k run offers a fun and fit morning for all

(Feb. 19, 2003)--Whether you are out to set a record, or you are out for a family stroll, the 19th annual Diploma Dash 5K run and fitness walk offers a fun morning for everyone.

This year's Diploma Dash is 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 at the UTSA Convocation Center at the 1604 Campus. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m.

The race serves as San Antonio's City Championship 5K race and is an official event of the San Antonio/Bexar County Fit City Initiative.

Individual registration is $20 and Corporate Team Challenge registration is $250. Other activities are free and open to all.

Added to this year's activities is a health fair coordinated by Jody Estraca, intern in UTSA Student Health Services. "I was thrilled at the response from the health providers," said Estrada."These are exceptional participants who are volunteering their time to give great screenings and free services."

Participants include European Massage Therapy Institute with massages, Integrative Medial doing spinal screenings, Texas Pedorthic conducting foot analysis, Sun Research Institute providing glucose testing, Dr. James Clark from UTSA Health and Kinesiology providing body fat analysis, Fitness Connections checking body fat and blood pressure, HealthSouth conducting grip testing and the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center conducting full blood diagnostic for persons who give blood that day.

The UTSA Student Alumni Association is coordinating children's activities including face painting and Daisey Bee the Clown making balloon creations.

The race benefits the UTSA alumni scholarship program (80 percent of proceeds) and UTSA track/cross country athlete scholarships (20 percent of proceeds). The UTSA Alumni Association raises more than $42,000 for scholarships through fund-raisers such as Diploma Dash.

The certified 5K course is a flat, fast route through the UTSA campus. The fitness walk follows a 1.5 mile scenic route through the campus. Walkers may also follow the 5K course.
