Gift supports new endowed chair in literature, humanities
(Feb. 5, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio has received a $500,000 gift from the George W. Brackenridge Foundation which will be used to create the Brackenridge Endowed Chair in Literature and the Humanities. The new position will support the university's new Ph.D. program in English.
"It is especially meaningful to us to have the Brackenridge name attached to a new endowed chair that will provide even further prestige to our Department of English, Classics, and Philosophy, said UTSA President Ricardo Romo.
"In addition to creating an important endowed academic position at UTSA, the latest Brackenridge Foundation gift also has a multiplier effect," added President Romo, noting that the contribution provides the necessary funds to match a $100,000 National Endowment for the Humanities challenge grant for which UTSA was selected in 2001.
The UTSA Department of English, Classics, and Philosophy previously benefited from Brackenridge Foundation gifts that funded the George W. Brackenridge Distinguished Visiting Professorship in the Humanities and the Sue E. Denman Distinguished Chair in American Literature.
"The George W. Brackenridge Foundation has been our single most important benefactor as we have developed our programs to the doctoral level, said Linda Woodson, chair of the Department of English, Classics, and Philosophy. "The Foundation's trustees have an intense interest in supporting research in the humanities, and we are grateful to them and proud of the faith they have placed in our faculty and students."
