North Carolina teacher to conduct rhetoric workshop

(Feb. 13, 2003)--Nancy Myers, a teacher of composition, linguisitics and history of rhetoric at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, will conduct a workshop, "History Lessons: Rhetorical Traditions for the Teaching of Writing," from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20 at the Multidisciplinary Studies Building Kiva (Room 2.02.18) on the UTSA 1604 Campus.

Myers will discuss what the intertwined history of rhetoric can offer today's university teachers who include writing in their courses.

Admission is free and open to the public, but participants are asked to reserve a seat. For reservations, contact Laura Ford, Teaching and Learning Center, at (210) 458-4050. For more information, contact Sue Hum at (210) 458-5339.

Sponsors of the lecture are the UTSA Teaching and Learning Center and the College of Liberal and Fine Arts Cultural Studies Lecture Series.

"The history of rhetoric and pedagogy provides us with answers to the ever-present student question, 'Why are we doing this?'" said Myers. She believes that because rhetorical and pedagogical concepts and practices weave through all disciplines, they help provide ways to model the teacher role as a fundamental component of professional character. She said this entails participation in research, the discipline of writing and society.

The ninety-minute, cross-disciplinary workshop engages teachers of writing in examining motives and practices by exploring the teaching agenda, various contexts of instruction (i.e. large lecture, seminar, computer-based) and writing assignment design.

Along with co-editing the fourth edition of "The Writing Teacher's Sourcebook," Myers recently published two articles on teaching: "Acting On or Acting With: Academe's Promotion of Exclusionary Participation in the Virtual Sphere" and "The Slave of Pedagogy: Composition Studies and the Art of Teaching" in "Teaching Writing: Landmarks and Horizons."

Myers is the recipient of the UNCG Alumni Teaching Excellence Award for 2001-2002 and is the director of English education.
